Nah screw that! Barako the Pirate will live on...
Okay, I know I said the game is dead three days ago, but screw it, I won't give up on Barako the Pirate. Matter of fact, I've started work on the second version of it already. I'm gonna make it again, from scratch.
I'll be honest. I suck at drawing. Suck at story telling. Suck at mapping and other stuff related to game design. And to top it all off I'm 37 and only made like 5 games. I used to have a perfection complex as well, like the Eye of Vyrius was in development for like 15 years. I was so convinced it'll be the greatest game ever. And it wasn't, it was dogcrap. You need to start on smaller games first before making bigger games, because you need the feedback, and you need to be able to complete your games and cut corners to do so. However, after making 5 games already, I feel that I'm ready to tackle a bigger, better project, and put more effort into my games. That includes Barako the Pirate.
The first version of Barako the Pirate was okayish, but it had a lot of problems. I mean, it's part of the reason I stopped development on it for like 5 months. It kinda sucked. The story especially, but the graphics were kinda ass as well. The map sprites arms were too short, and I'd have to go through them one by one and change the arm size. Not fun. Also anatomical mistakes were everywhere as well in the battlers, and they were too flat looking. They just weren't good sprites.
And the story. Oh god the story. Usually in story writing you make lots of drafts. Not so in Barako the Pirate, I wrote the cutscenes in RPG Maker itself. Technically I finished the first area Aldaraan Islands but the dialog and writing really let it down. About the only good things about the game were the fighting and the mapping. The fighting was really fun and there was incentive to swap characters because of the TP system. And the mapping was cool as well, I made sure to have plenty of treasure, secret areas, puzzles and events around so the player wasn't always just fighting all the time.
They say everything happens for a reason. I don't believe in that crap, I mean I'd be better off if I'd have my hard drive or made a backup, and as a Catholic, while not believing in predestination or God having an unalterable ultimate plan, I believe in free will, and your choices have objectively bad consequences (Call me not a true Christian if you want. I mean I've already admitted to drawing porn so there's that). However, it wasn't that bad losing my hard drive. I mean, I did upload the games I made to itch.io. I recently downloaded them. And there's still a backup of the first overview of the story of Barako the Pirate, as well as all the failed projects before seven years ago, so at least I didn't lose them. I mean, again, don't get me wrong, it sucks losing all my artwork and newer failed projects, but it could've been way, way worse, and the loss hasn't been too severe.
As for my mental health? Okay I probably do have paranoid schizophrenia, AND anxiety. I mean, I was hallucinating for quite awhile, more than the 30 or so minutes of a panic attack. So yeah. I'm a crazy bastard. That hospital still lost my hard drive though, screw them, but yeah, probably not gonna fight them on it, or fight the mental health tribunal decision on me being a schizo. Gonna have to take medication and be boring for the rest of my life. It's fine I guess, the drugs don't affect me too much.
I'll be updating again real soon, at least once a week. So stay tuned!

Good to hear. On wards and upwards! As far as story telling goes, do a search on youtube for GDC + "Writing, narrative, characters" etc there's sooooo much gold that will at the very least help minimise bad decisions. GDC lectures are an amazing resource. I'd also try to map out the basics or as much of the story as early as possible. Nothing worse than getting halfway, loosing your inspiration and having no plan to keep you afloat...
Lol yeah, good advice, especially about GDC. Gonna check them out.
And mapping out the basics is something I should do more often yeah, got way, way too excited creating the game and finishing the first part in like march so people could play it, so I cut corners.
Hi Barako :)
For your characters in games, I believe you can choose to whether draw them yourself or use the character generator in rpg maker or buy them from other people, which you choose is your choice, nothing can be perfect as hard as we try, there will be always people liking and disliking what one can do regardless if it is a game, a youtube video, anything people can make.
If you feel that you want to draw characters yourself then it is a good idea even if there might be mistakes :)
Making maps can be difficult at times that for sure, as long as you like how it turns out that what count whether you use default rpg maker tilesets or not.
The games you make as to please yourself first and since you let them free people cannot complain either if they do not like them.
Good luck on that new version of Barako the pirate :)
Yeah, thank you for the encouragement Anwynn! I feel like even though my skills are kinda crappy now, they could be great if I work on them, and receive feedback on my games.
And yeah, I shouldn't be such a perfectionist, I completely agree with you on making games to please yourself first, it's pretty unhealthy to obsess too much on feedback and comparing yourself to others.
Feedbacks are welcome in case of issues and to get a feeling of how it is welcomed :)
